Landscape design in Newcastle for a backyard you'll actually use
Tell us how you want to live out there. We'll draw it, fix the price and build it: retaining walls, paving, lawns and planting across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie.
The person who draws your garden is there when it's built
You explain what you want once, to one person, and that person draws it, prices it and runs the build. Nothing gets lost between a designer's plan and a builder's guess, so the drainage, the levels and the plants on your drawing are the ones you end up with.
If your block slopes, sits on clay or catches the salt wind, we've seen it before: 386 gardens across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie since 2014.
Six of this year's jobs, and the problem each owner had before we started: a sunken path in Hamilton, a bank washing away in Cameron Park. Sample projects: this is a demo.
Hamilton
A Federation front yard, given back its path
A curved brick path to the door, clipped hedging along one side and soft grasses along the other.
Cameron Park
A steep bank, turned into a walk through the trees
Hardwood sleeper steps up a steep slope, planted thickly on both sides so the bank holds in a storm.
Warners Bay
An outdoor room at the end of the lawn
A rendered pergola frame over a built-in seat, with stepping pavers set into the lawn to reach it.
Wallsend
A backyard that stopped flooding every storm
Concrete paving with lawn strips set into it, the whole yard regraded so storm water runs to a drain.
Georgetown
A courtyard garden for a house with no backyard
Large-format pavers down the length of the courtyard, with low planted beds along both sides.
Belmont
A coastal native garden that copes with salt wind
Banksia, westringia and lomandra in a mulched bed, with a crushed-sandstone path to the side gate.
The site visit and the drawing for a garden we build are included in the quote, so you don't pay for a design separately. Most of our backyard jobs land between $15,000 and $60,000 + GST, depending on walls, paving and how much of the block changes. You get a fixed price, item by item, before anything starts.
What happens at the free site visit?
One of the Fernline Landscapes crew comes to your place, usually within a week of your call. We walk the yard with you, measure it, check the slope, the soil and where the water goes, and ask how you want to use the space. About a week later you get a drawing and a fixed quote, item by item. The visit costs nothing and you're not committed to anything.
Are you licensed?
Yes. In NSW, structural landscaping over $5,000 (walls, paving, decks, pergolas, fencing) needs a contractor licence, and the licence number has to be on the advertising. Fernline Landscapes' licence number is on every page of this site, and your quote shows which parts of your job are licensed work.
Which areas do you cover?
All of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie from our yard in Broadmeadow: Hamilton, Georgetown, Wallsend, Maryland and Fletcher on the Newcastle side, and Warners Bay, Glendale, Cameron Park, Belmont and Toronto around the lake. If you're a bit further out, ring and ask.
How long does a garden take to build?
A single wall or a paved patio is usually one to two weeks on site. A full backyard with walls, paving, turf and planting runs four to eight weeks. The start date is in the quote, and so is the finish date.
Do you build pools?
No. Pool building is specialist work under its own licence, and we leave it to pool builders. We often do the garden, paving and planting around a new pool once it's in.
Send us your garden
A few photos and a rough idea is enough. We'll ring to book a free site visit, then send a fixed quote with a drawing.
