Landscaping services: your questions

Can you do just one part, like a wall, without the whole garden?

Yes. Plenty of our jobs are a single wall, a patio or a new lawn. We still look at the whole yard at the site visit, because a wall or a patio changes where the water goes, and it's cheaper to plan for that now than to fix it after the next storm.

Why do the prices have such a wide range?

Because two walls of the same length can be very different jobs. Access for the machine, how much soil comes out, what's under the ground, the drainage and the material all move the price. The guide gives you a fair starting point; the site visit turns it into a fixed figure for your yard.

Is the quote fixed, or will it change once you start?

Fixed. Your quote lists every item with its price, and it only changes if you change the plan. If we dig up something nobody could have known about, like old concrete or a buried pipe, we stop and talk to you before anything is added.

Do I need a design before you can quote?

No. We draw the garden as part of the quote, so you see the walls, levels, paving and plants on a plan before you decide. For a garden we build, the drawing is included in the price.

Which of these jobs need a licence?

In NSW, structural landscaping like retaining walls, paving, decks and pergolas needs a contractor licence once the job is over $5,000. Fernline Landscapes' licence number is on every page and every quote, and the quote shows which parts of your job are licensed work.

What order should the work happen in?

Hard work first, soft work last: drainage and walls, then paving, decks and pergolas, then soil, turf and planting. Doing it in that order means the machines never drive over a new lawn, and the plants go into soil that's already been graded to drain.
